Vestibular rehab refers to specifically targeted activities that effect the health and function of the vestibular system. The
vestibular system resides in our inner ear and functions as our body’s accelerometer, level and movement sensor. The most common condition is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which is typically characterized by room spinning and can often be corrected with just a few visits. These issues can strike individuals of any age, though they are more co
mmon in persons over 60.
* Not all therapy clinics provide vestibular therapy.
What can be treated?
- BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo)
- Room spinning or flipping sensations, mild or severe
- Feeling intoxicated
- Trouble with position changes (getting out of bed)
- Listing to one side
General feeling of being off balance- Positional nausea
- And more…
The vestibular system has otoliths (also referred to as crystals) that can be displaced from their proper location, and vestibular rehab maneuvers aim to move them back to their proper location. There are also issues of hyper or hypo-functioning of the organ, which can be conditioned with the right sets of activity.
